FUNDA UKUDLALA

Matthew 19:14
Jesus said, "Let the children come to me and do not stop them, because the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these."

Funda Ukudlala is isiXhosa for "learn to play" which is exactly what we are hoping to "teach" the children of Walmer Township at The Human Dignity Centre (HDC). By offering Arts & Crafts lessons to these children we are aiming to continually connect with them through painting, drawing, creating, fun and most of all, through our hearts. It is therefore very important to Rape Outcry that we ensure that this project will be sustainable so that we can bring a message of love, commitment and care to these precious children.

Sexual violence knows no boundaries. Unfortunately, some of these children are battling with brokenness and abuse which is why we are seeking to give them a voice that doesn't require words. Many children, as well as adults, find it easier to express themselves creatively through art; as sexual abuse is an incredibly painful violation to put into words. Fear of public humiliation, or further punishment, threat, shame, sorrow and apprehension are but a few of the emotions that hold people back and keep them trapped in a well of loneliness.

It is hoped that in an atmosphere of peace and joy the children will feel safe enough to open up to us so that we will be able to point out those who will need extra support and counselling. From all this, you may have gathered that this will be a collaborative project which will need a lot of planning and thinking-through. It is for these reasons that the project will only begin next year to give us time to put our ideas and passion into a structured research proposal. If you would like to get involved in any way, do not hesitate to send us an e-mail!

** Walmer Township is home to many impoverished and destitute people who barely have the essentials needed for survival. Thus, they are largely dependent on government funding and social support. The Human Dignity Centre has become a safe-haven for many children as well as their parents. The centre is largely sponsored by Jerusalem Ministries, a local mission based in Walmer, Port Elizabeth.
